![]() Portions copyright Microsoft Corporation. ITC Franklin Gothic is a trademark of The International Typeface Corporation which may be registered in certain jurisdictions. Franklin Gothic was named by Morris Fuller Benton in honor of Benjamin Franklin, whom Benton greatly admired for his significant contributions to American history and culture, and to printing in particular. This increased x-height ? which improved the typeface's appearance and readability ? and the availability of larger family made ITC Franklin Gothic a preferred choice when setting large blocks of sans serif text. Designed by Victor Caruso, these new designs matched the pure characteristics of the original Franklin Gothic, adhering closely to the subtle thick and thin pattern of the original ATF typeface while featuring a slightly enlarged lowercase x-height. In 1979, under license from ATF, International Typeface Corporation created four new weights ? Book, Medium, Demi and Heavy ? in roman and italic versions. ![]() For some unknown reason no light or intermediate weights were ever created. Over the next several years, the ATF family was expanded to include italic, condensed, condensed shaded, extra condensed and wide variants. This alternate character is available as an OpenType alternate when using software which supports OpenType features.Designed in 1904 by Morris Fuller Benton for the American Type Founders company, Franklin Gothic was originally conceived as only one weight. The MLC also included a second version of ‘W’ created by overlapping to ‘V’s. The alphabet was printed with no punctuation, and therefore all punctuation and characters have been created by the MLC, using existing versions as a guide. The MLC designed two extra weights, “Wide” which contains much broader geometry and near circular round letters like ‘O’ and ‘C’, and a “Regular” weight which is an exact average of the other two. The lower horizontal strokes on ‘E’, ‘L’, ‘Z’, and ‘2’ are unique to this style, and the long tail of ‘Q’ which drops very deep below the baseline is also a distinguishing characteristic. The version drawn for the book was a condensed Commercial Gothic, having a very narrow geometry, something not common among Commercial Gothic alphabets. Because many of the lettering styles included in the book were based on existing alphabets, it is unknown at this time if the Commercial Gothic was original in design or a derivative of another. The chapter on lettering was written and drawn by Mike Johns and Ricky Tichy of the Johns-Carabelli Co. This alphabet was printed in a series of lettering examples for the memorial industry in the 1982 American Monument Association book Symbols: The Universal Language. It also pairs well with modern or minimalist design, art deco design, and due to its simplicity works well when used as engaged or raised lettering. This style of letter should be used when legibility rather than beauty of form is most desired or needed. After it was printed as an example alphabet for the memorial industry in 1982, it was digitized in various monument design software including Craftech, Gerber Omega, and Monu-Cad. This alphabet was designed for sandblasting, but could easily be used for hand carved v-cut letters. All three weights are included in the download. For a sample character map see the MLC Font Project page. ![]() * Only the basic character set is shown here.

There was another surprise, and a very welcome one - there’s no wait for the Pixel 7a, as it’s available right now. Matching the Pixel 7, this increased frame rate will mean using it will feel smoother than ever before. It’s also packing another first for the Pixel A - a 90Hz refresh rate. The 6.1-inch display with slim bezels mean the phone is a lot more one-hand-friendly than the Pixel 7 or Pixel 7 Pro, making it perfect for those who find the bigger phones tough to manage. It’s likely to be the Google phone to keep an eye for compact phone fans, as it’s the smallest of the range. It has a smaller battery than last year’s Pixel 6a, but it does have wireless charging this time around, meaning it’s a lot more convenient than its predecessor. The camera pedigree of the Pixel is, without doubt, superb, so we’re looking forward to seeing what this model can accomplish. The Pixel 7a also has the largest megapixel count ever seen on an A-series Pixel, thanks to the 64-megapixel main lens. The Pixel 7a has the same Google Tensor G2 processor as its flagship cousins, giving it a high level of performance whether you’re browsing the internet or playing Fortnite. ![]() As expected, it’s a slightly toned-down version of the flagship Pixel 7, but one that doesn’t compromise on processing power or camera capabilities. The Google Pixel 7a, the worst-kept secret of the last few months, has been officially revealed. Google I/O is traditionally where Google announces the next version of its midrange A-series phone, and this year is no different. Google Pixel 7a Christine Romero-Chan / Digital Trends Anyone hoping for a lower starting price will be disappointed, as the Pixel Fold starts at a hefty $1,799. Preorders are open now, and units will ship next month when ordered from the Google Store. That could be a weak point for this big foldable phone, and we’ll be sure to let you know if it struggles. There are 256GB and 512GB variants in terms of storage, and the battery is a relatively small 4,821mAh. It’ll be interesting to see how it holds up when pushed in the much larger Pixel Fold. This chip is plenty powerful enough, even if it has some issues with overheating during gaming. Neither selfie lens is likely to set our best camera phones list on fire, but that won’t matter when you can use the rear cameras to take a selfie anyway.įinally, the Pixel Fold is powered by the same Tensor G2 chip as the Pixel 7 range. The selfie camera on the outer screen is a 9.5MP fixed-focus lens, which is a little disappointing on paper - but Google threw another lens inside to make up for it, as the inner screen also has an 8MP lens. The rear camera setup comprises a 48MP main lens, a 10.8MP ultrawide lens, and a 10.8MP 5x optical zoom. Speaking of the camera, the Pixel Fold looks set to continue Google’s tradition of amazing smartphone photography. The Pixel Fold will be able to take amazing night sky photos without needing a tripod by unfolding the phone, placing it facedown, and using the outer screen as a viewfinder. Take the Pixel’s excellent astrophotography mode, for instance. ![]() ![]() These features are nothing new - the Z Fold 4 has the same features - but there are some niche cases where the Pixel Fold will shine. Or, face the rear cameras toward yourself and use the outer screen as a viewfinder for the perfect selfie. The Pixel Fold is built to work in a half-folded “tabletop” mode that’s perfect for watching videos, or for setting the phone down for a tripod-less selfie. Google has put a lot of thought into how the phone’s fold can be useful. It’s also the thinnest folding phone available right now, and while there are visibly chunky forehead and chin bezels, they’ll be useful for holding the phone while in the unfolded mode. A 2208 x 1860 resolution joins a 120Hz refresh rate and a max brightness of 1,450 nits - making it every bit the technical powerhouse as the outer display, but in a much, much larger 6:5 aspect ratio. Fold open the phone, and you’re treated to a 7.6-inch OLED display with similarly showstopping specs. That impressive display isn’t even the star, either. The 5.8-inch outer OLED display is much smaller than those on any of the other Pixel phones on the market right now, and it sports an impressive 2400 x 1080 resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, and a max brightness of 1,550 nits. The now iconic Pixel camera bar is present on the rear, while the front of the phone looks quite similar to the Pixel 7 Pro, with slim bezels and a centrally placed hole-punch selfie camera. It’s clear this is a Pixel phone from the moment it’s visible. Originally scheduled for December 9, the launch date was pushed back to Saturday, December 11, due to windy conditions. ![]() Michael Strahan of ABC's "Good Morning America" and Laura Shepard Churchley will fly as guests of Blue Origin, joining four paying customers: philanthropist Dylan Taylor, investor Evan Dick, Lane Ventures founder Lane Bess and his son, Cameron. Strahan, who stands at six feet and five inches, was the tallest person in space, and Echazarreta, who was born in Mexico, was hailed as the first ever Mexican woman in space. The third crewed flight of Blue Origin's New Shepard suborbital spacecraft will launch in December with a crew of six, including a network morning anchor and the eldest daughter of Mercury astronaut Alan Shepard, the first American in space, the company announced. ![]() With few exceptions, people who flew for free or through sponsors were often featured as the milestone passenger of their mission and became part of what some might call a gimmicky marketing campaign.įunk and Shatner, 82 and 90, respectively, at the time of their flights, were the oldest persons to go to space. There is an element of kudos in being part of what may be a very exclusive and small group of participants.” Blue Origin gives away free rides to certain passengers “It’s not only the amount of money available. In space tourism, Davis added, customers tend to be willing to pay a significant premium in exchange for a coveted experience. “In a very basic sense, something is worth what someone will pay for it.” The practice is commonplace in luxury goods and services where demand exceeds supply, said Nick Davis, founder of Instajet, a private jet charter service. In the U.S., price discrimination is legal as long as it’s not based on a prohibitive basis, such as race, ethnicity, gender, or religion. The Federal Aviation Administration, which regulates the commercial human spaceflight, doesn’t have any rules around how much a company can charge its passengers or whether they can customize pricing. “It sounds as though they don’t want to say what their price is so that they can tailor it to how much you are worth, and you still feel like you get a good deal because you are paying less than the person who bought the first seat through the auction,” said Chrisman of the Foundation for the Future. In June 2021, Blue Origin’s nonprofit branch, Club for the Future, donated $1 million to Space for Humanity with money from the auction proceeds from Blue Origin’s maiden flight. Space for Humanity declined to disclose how much Echazarreta’s ticket cost, but said it paid with the support of former New Shepard passengers. Katya Echazarreta, a 26-year-old electrical engineer who hosts a science show on YouTube, flew on a June 4 flight paid for by Space for Humanity, a nonprofit founded by Dylan Taylor, an investor who flew on a New Shepard mission in December 2021. Some didn’t pay Blue Origin directly but had sponsors cover the cost. Several passengers paid nothing, flying as Blue Origin’s “honorable guests.” That included aviation pioneer Wally Funk, Star Trek actor William Shatner, former football star Michael Strahan, and Laura Shepard Churchley, the daughter of astronaut Alan Shepard (after whom Blue Origin named its rocket). The passenger is a board member of the nonprofit, Chrisman said. But a passenger who is scheduled to fly this December paid only $1 million for his seat, according to Tim Chrisman, a former CIA officer and the cofounder of the Foundation for the Future, a nonprofit advocating for infrastructure development in space. After the winner said he couldn’t make the trip due to a schedule conflict, the seat was sold to the second highest bidder, who reportedly paid nearly as much. In June 2021, Blue Origin auctioned off a seat on its maiden flight for $28 million-more than 100 times what Virgin Galactic charges for a similar experience. Blue Origin ticket ranges from zero to $28 million Even the most out-of-reach space experience has a price tag: Axiom Space, a Texas startup, is marketing a 10-day trip to the International Space for $55 million. Space Perspective charges $125,000 per person on a six-hour journey to the stratosphere in a balloon-borne pressurized capsule. Virgin Galactic sells a 90-minute ride to suborbital space for $450,000 per seat. Most of Blue Origin’s competitors follow a simpler approach. Blue Origin declined to discuss its pricing strategy. It’s kind of a package deal,” said Roman Chiporukha, cofounder of SpaceVIP, a platform that helps the wealthy book space trips, including Blue Origin’s. “It’s not about money it’s about who you are, your social capital, whether you align with their launch purposes. ![]() Wondershare is a global leader in application software development with 6 offices around the globe and 1000+ talented employees.
